Tuition and fees will climb this fall at College of DuPage as officials work to address a projected gap between revenues and expenses.
Board members in the Glen Ellyn-based community college recently voted to raise the price of tuition by $4 per credit hour, to some total of $144 for in-district students. That amount includes fees.
Students coming from outside the district will see their cost climb to $331 per credit hour. Choosing to extend tuition Isn‘t a simple decision and never one taken lightly, COD President Robert Breuder said inside a written statement. However, in generating revenue to cover the operation of the institution, We‘re limited using a local tax cap, dwindling state funding by the economy in general.
Historically, the state is liable for providing one-third from the revenue for community colleges. At this time, about 3 percent from the profit COD's operating budget comes coming from the state, officials said.
There isn‘t any question the state is weaning itself off funding public advanced schooling, COD spokesman Joe Moore said.
COD collected roughly $80 million in property taxes to the current fiscal year. The levy to the coming fiscal year is predicted to become about $1. 4 million more.
Still, the extra property tax revenue is not likely going to be enough in order to make up for shortfalls caused by higher expenses.
COD officials say the rising expenses are because of increased costs for health insurance, utilities and salaries.
Moore said salary and benefits constitute about 73 percent from the college's operating budget. That is about $128 million to the current fiscal year.
Still, it took a 4 to 3 vote from the COD board to approve the higher tuition and fees. Trustees Dianne McGuire, Kathy Hamilton and Kim Savage opposed the hike.
We‘ve a sufficient amount of cash inside the fund balance,
We don‘t require a tuition increase for next year.
Consistent with Savage, the increase will generate about $2 million in additional revenue. Meanwhile, she said, COD has greater than $140 million inside the bank.
Savage said the school should have dipped into that fund balance to cover the budget shortfall.
The scholars struggle to cover college, and also the taxpayers are struggling, we have to be as prudent as you can using the dollars that weve available.
From the $4-per-credit-hour increase, $1 will attend tuition and $3 will attend fees.
Officials said one-third of cash generated from the higher fees will pay for college students to possess free admittance to the fitness center. The remainder is perfect for obligated debt service.
The final time COD officials increased tuition and fees would be a year ago. Actually, the administration includes a policy of adopting annual increases.
Breuder said the administration believes incremental tuition increases are much more easier for college students to handle than holding back until a double-digit increase is needed. This strategy has worked.
College of DuPage is seeing semester after semester of stellar enrollment at any given time when nearly all other community colleges inside the state are experiencing flat or drastic declines in enrollment.
COD officials say their school is not alone when one thinks of increasing tuition and fees. They pointed to Oakton Community College, where tuition will go up 16 percent over subsequent 2 yrs.
